The Concept: A Playful Twist on Vampire Lore

"Love Bites" was inspired by my love for gothic imagery, dark humor, and vintage art. Featuring a retro Dracula, it imagines a vampire getting too close for comfort. This fun, dramatic take on romance adds a vintage texture, giving it a nostalgic feel like a classic wardrobe staple.

The Drawing Process: From Paper to Digital

The journey of creating this design started with a simple pencil sketch. I wanted the image to feel dramatic and bold, yet slightly playful, so I drew Dracula with sharp, exaggerated features and an over-the-top posture. The simplicity of the sketch gave me the freedom to add lots of details later in the process. Once I had the basic design on paper, I scanned it into my computer. From there, the real fun began. Using Photoshop, I carefully processed the scan, starting with cleaning up the lines and refining the details. I wanted the final image to feel like a vintage screen print, so I took an extra step to break it down into three layers based on the main colors. This approach allowed me to give the image a much more dynamic and textured feel, as well as making it ready for halftoned stipple shading—similar to old-school printing methods.

Halftone Stipples: Adding Vintage Charm

To achieve a classic retro print look, I used a halftone technique, adding a stipple effect. This method mimics old screen printing, creating an imperfect, iconic texture. I applied the stipples to Dracula’s shading and the background, giving the image depth and an authentic vintage feel.

Once the design itself was complete, I added some final touches to give it that well-loved, worn-in appearance. Using various textures and grunge effects, I made the design look like it had been through years of wear and wash, just like your favorite vintage tees. The distressed, cracked look makes the design feel as if it has a long history—just like your favorite horror movies that never get old.
